Abu Muharrik Dune Safari – 7 days

Ghurd Abu Muharrik or “Father of Movement”; one of the largest dune belts in the Western/Libyan Desert in Egypt, over 600 kms of moving dunes, beginning east of Baharya Oasis (350kms south of Cairo) down to Abu Tartur cliff at Kharga Oasis. Moving at a rate of 1m/year this safari is destined for adventure travelers looking to fully disconnect from our modern busy lives and live and travel with the Bedouins of Baharya Oasis.
Once we leave the ashphalt, we will not encounter and roads, people, or filling stations; all water and benzene will be carried by our 4×4 Landcruisers, with a 2nd supply stashed along the route as we continue south along the dune belt.
The cars will fly along, beside, up and over countless dune-scapes as the tires hum along the trackless sand. 5 nights of camping in different locations, numerous diverse landscapes, campfire meals, countless stars and the Milky Way overhead at night will clear the mind and stimulate the imagination of thousands of years of travel by foot and camel by the keepers of this ancient land.

Day 1 Your trip will start in Cairo at 8AM, traveling by car to Al Haiz Oasis Ecolodge where you will settle into rooms, enjoy a welcome drink and lunch. We will take an afternoon excursion to the hot spring in the small village of Rees, a visit to an ancient Roman Winery, and a sunset tea in the local dunes before returning to the Lodge for dinner.
Day 2 Our adventure safari will begin after breakfast, heading 1 hour north to the top of Abu Muharrik dunes. We will spend 2 days traversing the dunes, discovering ancient springs (Magic Spring), stop for a fresh water wash in the sunshine and find scattered pottery left by the Roman Garrisons (trade posts)

Day 3 We will reach the underground wonder of Djara Cave.

Djara Cave

Day 4 Over the next 2 days we will continue southwest toward Kharga Oasis with many stops at points of interest; ultimately letting the weather, travel time and the Bedouins lead the way. We will traverse valleys full of prehistoric (stone-age) signs of life, tools, Alums (desert markers) plateaus, and mountains with incredible views. Sometimes we get stuck! It is all part of the adventure, and we always have equipment and able bodies to get us out of anything. Satellite phones, air compressors, GPS mapping systems, mechanical tools and first-aid kit are all close at hand. Sit back and enjoy the ride! While they dig us out, there will be an opportunity to get out stretch your legs and take in the current surroundings.

Day 5 & 6 we will start heading north towards Aguabat Valley and finally the incomparable White Desert of Egypt. Our last night of camping always prompts a Bedouin party with music, dancing, fireside snacks and tea.
We will end the safari with Crystal Mountain, with time for discovery, cave & mountain climbing and photos. Finally reaching the ashphalt and the last hour back to Al Haiz Lodge for a hot shower and relaxation in the sun and fresh spring. Our last dinner together is our Duck Mandi, special rice, rich soup and live music around the fire in the Bedouin tent.
Day 7 One last breakfast and light lunch before the car will pick up at 3PM for the return trip to Cairo.

This Safari is available at anytime, with at least 2 weeks for permissions and preparations to begin. Passport photos must be sent within this time. Minimum attendees are 2 people at $220/per day, per person. 3 people at $210/day per person, 4 people $200/day per person. Groups larger than 4 people please contact us directly for current pricing.

Prices are in USD, and gratuities in cash are greatly appreciated.

Walk The Desert Part 2 – Camel Safari

11th of Feb- 17th of Feb 6 Nights/7 Days

OVERVIEW:

EGYPT has quite a few ancient desert highways; most of them are unexplored. We tend to explore a lot of these desert trails. Recently, amazing efforts by few desert enthusiasts opened new trails in the Red Sea Trail (RST), and Sinai- the Sinai Trail (ST). I plan to open new trails in the Western Desert and this is the second undertaking; following a very successful trail we crossed in the area of North Fayoum.

The area we will cross is in areas that are less traveled and still has a lot of mysteries and amazing hidden landscapes. We will be hiking each day for 20-25km in the vast and magnificent region between the oases of Baharya and Farafara. This track will also include the picturesque and the unique White Desert.
The White Desert is one of its kind on earth; certainly a unique and magnificent area that lies in the heart of the Western Desert of Egypt. It is like being on a different planet with lunar landscape, amazing sunsets and spectacular night skies. This trip is designed to get a complete desert experience; silence, camels, unmatched landscapes, and traditional food. This is a journey through time and unique spaces where one can rejuvenate and self-reflect for a deeper self-understanding while enjoying a physically challenging experience which elevate the whole experience. Water Mountain Expedition

Water Mountain Expedition 17th Feb- 25th Feb, 2024 (9 Days)

Overview:
Deep in the heart of the Western Desert of Egypt there is a ‘stone temple’ dating thousands of years old. The site was recently discovered in 2001 by the German explorer Carlo Bergmann. Carlo explored the desert relying entirely on his physical stamina and on the ‘ships of the desert’, the camel, Carlo followed ancient trails based on the writings of historians and geographers. The discovery of the Mountain was the highlight of the German explorer’s desert research work and it had provided massive new information on Ancient Egyptian existential projects and travels in the Libyan Desert; thus, this is one of the most important sites in the Western Desert of Egypt.

This expedition is unique and exceptional at this time for many reasons including; first, the area had been off-limits for the last 10 years and we have been granted a permission to access; second, the entire area is full of prehistoric rock art that has not been properly surveyed and new sites can actually found; third, we have time to invest in the area in search of and documenting the known sites; finally, you are to join two of the most experienced desert guides, and organizers in Egypt, Mahmoud Marai and Abdu Shaban.

The expedition will start from Al-Haiz, the southernmost village of the Baharyia Oasis, in well-equipped, and well-maintained Land Cruisers. The vehicles and crew will have our provisions and supplies loaded and we will be ready to begin our desert expedition. First, we will head towards one of the oldest caves with paintings and hand prints, Obayied Cave. Following visiting this site, we will advance into the formidable dunes of the Great Sea of Sand; a land mass the size of England with only sand dunes. Finally we will arrive at the foot of the Djedefra Water Mountain to camp for two nights to marvel at the site and explore nearby areas. The last day will take us to Dakhla Oasis where we will dive into a hot natural spring and a traditional Bedouin dinner.
