🏜️ About Al Haiz & The White Desert

Al Haiz is the southernmost village of the Bahariya Oasis, a gateway to the Western Desert . The region is known for its unique geology, with the White Desert offering a spectacular, alien landscape of limestone formations that provide a breathtaking backdrop for astrophotography .

The area is a photographer’s dream. The lack of light pollution makes it one of the best places on Earth to capture the Milky Way and the Perseid meteors . This year’s new moon ensures you will capture the best possible shots without any moonlight washing out the stars.

Beyond the Crowds, Beneath the Eclipse

Black Desert Egypt the 2027 Eclipse: Escape the Crowds in Luxor for a Private Desert Miracle

Forget the images of crowded riverboats and packed viewing sites in Luxor. You’re not a tourist; you’re an explorer.

On August 2, 2027, the skies over Egypt will stage a celestial spectacle—a total solar eclipse lasting over 6 minutes. It will be one of the longest of the century, a moment of profound darkness in the middle of the day and we are right in the path of totality. The world’s eclipse chasers will be descending upon the typical viewing spots, creating what promises to be a chaotic and congested experience.

Our offer is different. It is an invitation to an exclusive, private, and profoundly authentic experience.

We are a Bedouin-owned company, and we are inviting a limited number of guests to witness this cosmic event from our ancestral home: the majestic Black Desert, just south of the Bahariya Oasis; 4.5 hours drive SW of Cairo.

Imagine this: instead of jostling for a view, you will have the otherworldly, volcanic landscape of the Black Desert as your private backdrop. The silence of the desert, broken only by the wind and the beating of your own heart, will be the soundtrack to your eclipse.

A 3-Day, 2-Night Immersive Program (Aug 1-3, 2027)

Why Choose the Black Desert?

  • Zero Light Pollution: Far from major cities, the celestial corona will appear exceptionally sharp against the pristine desert atmosphere.
  • High Sun Angle: The eclipse occurs with the sun high in the sky, providing perfect angles for panoramic photography and tracking the shadow’s approach over the mountains.
  • Weather Certainty: August in the Western Desert features a statistical cloud cover of under 5%, offering virtually guaranteed visibility.
  • This specific location will experience an astonishing 6 minutes and 16 seconds of complete darkness in the middle of the day, making it one of the absolute best natural settings on Earth to witness the event!

Calling All Rock Lovers & Stargazing Wanderers

7 Days in Egypt’s Western Desert – A Rocky Adventure for Curious Travelers

Forget the idea that the desert is just empty sand. Egypt’s Western Desert is like a giant, open-air museum of Earth’s history—and you get to 4×4 caravan right through it.

Over 7 days, you will:

· Walk on seafloors that were once underwater.

· See whale bones frozen in stone.

· Climb black volcanic hills.

· Explore a real cave with ancient stalactites.

· Camp under stars so bright you’ll forget city lights exist.

This trip is designed for curious minds, not scientists. You don’t need a geology degree—just good mood, a sense of adventure, and a love for strange rocks and big landscapes.

Day 1: Cairo → Fayoum → Valley of the Whales

From the city to an ancient ocean floor- A surreal introduction to the desert—part paleontology, part time travel.

Drive south from Cairo into the Fayoum Depression. Your first stop is the famous Valley of the Whales—a UNESCO site where you can actually see 40-million-year-old whale skeletons lying in the sand.

These weren’t just any whales—they had tiny legs! They lived in a shallow, warm sea that covered this area long before the Sahara was a desert.

· Sandy rocks with wavy lines—those are ancient ripples from ocean currents.

· Dark, crumbly layers with fossil roots—signs that the sea once retreated and plants grew.

· You’ll also spot burrows and tracks left by ancient worms and crabs.

Day 2: Watermelon Stones & The Great Dunes

Giant stone balls and endless sand waves- A day of weird shapes and endless horizons—great for photos and quiet thinking.

Head into the Fayoum Desert to find the famous “Watermelon Stones”—huge, round, perfectly spherical rocks that can weigh as much as a person.

Nobody knows exactly why they’re so round, but they formed underwater millions of years ago, as minerals slowly crystallized around tiny particles—like pearl formation, but on a giant scale.

Drive along the Abu Muharrik Dunes—a massive chain of golden sand dunes that stretch for miles. You’ll see how the desert meets the white limestone cliffs.

Day 3: Prehistoric Tools & Desert Treasures

Hunting for ancient artifacts and shiny rocks- Like a scavenger hunt across a prehistoric workshop floor.

Today is about treasure hunting—but the ancient kind. You’ll visit spots where prehistoric people left behind stone knives, arrowheads, and flakes—tools they made right here, thousands of years ago.

You’ll learn to spot the raw materials they used:

· Quartzite in red, yellow, and black.

· Flint—sharp and glassy.

· Fossil wood—petrified tree trunks to tiny branches turned to stone.

· Fossil coral and shell mounds—proof that the sea once covered this desert.

· Alabaster veins—a soft, creamy stone used by Egyptians for jars and carvings.

Day 4: Djara Cave – Underground Time Capsule

Stalactites, climate clues, and Neolithic shelters- Cool, dark, and mysterious—a hidden world beneath the blazing sun.

Deep in the desert, you’ll find Djara Cave—one of the few caves in the region with real stalactites, stalagmites, and stone columns, some over 6 meters tall.

These formations grew only during wet periods—when rain was common in the Sahara. Scientists have dated them to over 140,000 years ago. That means this cave was dripping water while mammoths still roamed Europe.

You’ll see flint tools left by Neolithic people who stopped here around 5,500 BC, using the cave as a rest stop between the Nile and the oases.

Day 5: The White Desert – Moonwalk on Earth

Chalk towers, wind sculptures, and flower stones- Surreal, quiet, and unforgettable—especially at sunset.

Enter the White Desert National Park—a landscape so strange it feels like another planet. Bright white chalk and limestone have been carved by wind into mushroom shapes, giant cones, and even rock “flowers.”

The white rock is made of tiny marine fossils—so you’re walking on ancient plankton. The wind has done the rest, sculpting soft stone into surreal art over millions of years.

The “flower stones”—delicate-looking rock formations that look like petals, but are actually made of basalt.

Day 6: Aguabat Valley, Crystal Mountain & The Black Desert

From white chalk to black volcanic peaks and finally private room in ecolodge

A complete change of scenery. First, we enter the soaring white mountains and rock obstacles of Aguabat Valley. Incredibly picturesque, rapidly changing landscape as we sail along the sand highways.

Crystal Mountain—a hill covered in glittering quartz crystals that sparkle like diamonds in the sun. Adventures can climb up into the Crystal Mountain’s cave.

Enter the Black Desert, where volcano-shaped hills rise from the sand, capped with dark basalt rock.

These black caps are 180 million years old—from the time of the dinosaurs. They formed underwater, as lava erupted on the seafloor. Later, the sea disappeared and the land rose up, leaving these dark, jagged mounds behind.

A dramatic contrast—white, black, and crystal-clear—all in one day.

Arrive back to the Oasis, check into rooms (single occupancy available in pre-booking)

Final dinner and Bedouin party in Al Haiz Ecolodge

Day 7: Return to Cairo & Wrap-Up

Lazy morning on the oasis, swim in our fresh water spring pool, walk among the date palms or visit the farm animals. The ecolodge also houses a 10x10m yoga space, a meditation spaces and library.

After a big brunch of local Oasis produce, final packing for transfer back to Cairo 3PM

Putting the pieces together

· How this desert was once a sea, then a jungle, then a cave-filled land, and finally a volcanic seascape.

· How the same place can hold whale bones, ancient tools, cave deposits, and lava caps—all within a week’s drive.

Satisfied, dusty, and full of awe—with a new way of seeing the world beneath your feet.

This trip isn’t about memorizing names or dates. It’s about seeing with your own eyes how our planet changes—slowly, violently, and beautifully. Whether you’re a rock hound, a history buff, or just someone who loves wide-open spaces, this desert will leave you changed.

Pack your camera, your curiosity, and a good hat. The desert is waiting.

Total costs are all inclusive 1600€ per person – minimum 4 people

Return to Lake Toshka Nov 20 – Dec 2, 2026

For the traveler who defines adventure by depth, not checklist. This is the journey beyond all others—an eleven-night, fully-immersive crossing into the silent, uninhabited heart of the Sahara. Leave every notion of Egypt behind and travel with us, a Bedouin-owned company with over 20 years of guiding in the deep desert, to where the map ends and the true story begins.

This is not a tour. It is a full-scale expedition for the spirit of exploration. We move with the rhythm of the ancient sands, traversing legendary dunes, forgotten oases, and crystalline rock formations unseen by the outside world. Here, you will trade crowded trails for boundless horizons, noise for profound silence, and the familiar for the truly sublime.

We don’t just show you the desert; we welcome you into its timeless embrace.

Arrival & Departure Logistics

All expeditions begin at Al Haiz Ecolodge. You must arrive the day before departure and spend the night with us. This is essential—not only to rest, but to begin shedding the outside world. The following morning, after a final breakfast together, we pack the 4x4s as a team. This is when the journey truly begins: checking supplies, securing gear, and feeling the weight of the deep desert settle in. By the time we roll out, you will already be part of the caravan, not just a passenger.

The Expedition Arc

Days 1–2 | Al Haiz Ecolodge & Departure
Arrival, overnight, breakfast, and final packing. Then we roll south into the void.

Days 2–6 | The Abu Muharrik Dune Belt – North to South
A full traverse of one of the Sahara’s most legendary dune fields. From the northern edge to the southern tip, we move with the rhythm of the ancient sands. Towering razorbacks, hidden corridors, and camps where no other tracks disturb the ground. This is the deep desert as it has always been: vast, silent, and unforgivingly beautiful.

Days 6–8 | The Toshka Lakes – Two Nights at the Water’s Edge
You cross from endless dunes into something that defies belief. Freshwater. Deep, clear, and abundant with fish, sitting at the base of rock walls and golden dunes. The Nile reached this place decades ago and never left.

We descend. We stop. We stay for two full nights.

Day 6: Arrive in the late afternoon. The light turns the dunes gold and the water deep blue. Swim. Wade. Fish alongside local Bedouin fishermen who work these silent waters. Watch them haul tilapia and Nile perch from a lake that should not exist.

Night 1 at Toshka: A fire on the shore. The lapping of freshwater against desert rock. Stars reflected in a surface no other tourist will see this year.

Day 7: A full day of stillness. Explore coves where sandstone meets the lake. Sit in silence. Float in freshwater while staring at endless desert in every direction.

Night 2 at Toshka: Your final night on the water. No rush. No exit. Just the fire, the water, and the profound strangeness of this place.

Days 8–11 | The Return North – Through the White Desert
From the water’s edge, we turn north. Three nights moving through landscapes that feel like another planet—the White Desert’s wind-sculpted chalk formations. Mushroom rocks, crystalline fields, and dawn light turning the limestone to silver and rose. By the time we emerge, you will have crossed the Sahara not as a visitor, but as someone who lived inside it.

Night 11 | Final Night Under the Stars
Your last camp. The fire is low. The stories have been told. In the morning, the drive back to Al Haiz—but you already know you will return.

What This Journey Holds

· A True North–South Traverse: Not a loop. Not a tourist circuit. A full crossing of the Abu Muharrik dune belt from end to end.
· The Impossible Lakes of Toshka: Two nights camped at the edge of freshwater Nile lakes in the deepest Sahara. Swim. Fish. Float. Witness what few have seen.
· The White Desert: Three final nights among the most surreal rock formations on Earth—chalk towers carved by wind into impossible shapes.
· Bedouin Navigation & Wisdom: Travel with generations of knowledge. Our guides share the stories, survival skills, and heartfelt hospitality that have defined life here for centuries.
· The Gift of Profound Space: Night after night under the open sky. No schedule but the sun and stars. Silence so complete you will hear your own heartbeat.

This is the definitive desert experience—a convergence of thrilling adventure, raw beauty, and cultural authenticity. Designed for those who wish not just to see, but to be transformed by the elemental power of the deep Sahara.

Egypt: Where Two Worlds Meet

Egypt sits at the northeast corner of Africa, brushing shoulders with the Middle East—and embodying the best of both worlds. It shares deep connections with the region: the same rich gastronomy, soulful music, vibrant atmosphere, and religion. Yet Egypt stands entirely on its own.

With over 20 years of consistent operation in this extraordinary country, Al Haiz Oasis brings unmatched local expertise and on-the-ground experience—opening the door to unforgettable journeys.

Few places on Earth can rival Egypt’s depth of history. Dynasties and archaeological sites seem to outnumber the stars in the desert sky. In the 19th century, Egypt sparked a worldwide fascination that has never truly faded.

The Great Pyramids of Giza rise as the last surviving Wonder of the Ancient World. In Luxor, the Valleys of the Kings and Queens whisper stories of pharaohs and complex cosmologies. In Aswan—a city shaped by ancient Nubian language and culture—honey-colored ruins glow in the sun.

But Egypt’s legendary landmarks are only the beginning.

In the gritty, storied capital of Cairo, architecture and cuisine draw from a melting pot of influences: Roman, Ottoman, French, and British. The Red Sea beckons divers with clear, warm waters and vibrant reef systems. Along the Mediterranean, Alexandria pulses with life and legend—forever tied to Cleopatra, whose lost tomb remains hidden somewhere beneath its maze of museums and modern architecture.

And flowing through it all is the Nile—one of the world’s greatest rivers, cutting the desert in two as the lifeblood of the country.

Finally, create a custom safari to landmark geologic locations and beyond; into the sands of sunrises and sunsets. In powerful Toyota Land Cruisers, you’ll discover profound silence, thrilling dune adventures, camping under the Milky Way, and authentic Bedouin food, music and hospitality.

Let Al Haiz Oasis tailor your perfect Egyptian vacation today.

Heading north through Black Desert, up the escarpment towards the gorgeous El Gerrenat mountainous area for lunch. We will pack up lunch and continue towards Abu Muharrik sand dunes (Father of Dunes) with several points of interest along the way and photo and discovery stops until we find our camp spot for the night.

Day 3: 7AM sunrise in the dunes, with the long shadows and picturesque landscapes, we will pack up camp, and have a hot breakfast. Continuing to head southwest through the dunes, to Djara Cave; the largest of its kind in Egypt, this underground cave is approximately 20 meters down soft sand to arrive at a massive cavern full of stalactites, stalagmites and petroglyphs.

As you tour the cave, our crew will prepare a hot lunch outside the cave, where we will eat, have hot tea/coffee before we continue on.
After a short time on the asphalt, a quick rest stop to re-fuel, grab snacks or use the restroom.
We will head off-road again, passing through a very unique area of ‘watermelon stones’. Our journey continues north west through Caraween dunes, for an afternoon of riding the dunes, sand boarding, until we find the perfect spot to set-up camp for the night.

Day 4: 7AM sunrise in the dunes, time for a walk up the dunes for pictures or sand boarding, while we pack up camp, and have a hot breakfast. Once camp is down and packed up, we will arrive at the southend of the White desert. We will spend the next few hours discovering the large wind-swept rock formations, stoping to walk and take pictures.
As we leave the White Desert, we will be on the asphalt for a short while until we hit Aguabat Valley where we will find a nice lunch spot in this area. Final stop is Crystal Mountain, a massive Quartz crystal area for discovery.
We will head back to Al Haiz Oasis Ecolodge, unpack while everyone settles into their rooms for a hot shower and a restful time until dinner is served, followed by a Bedouin party!

Celestial Symphony in the Desert

Their positioning will create the illusion of cosmic choreography. Alignments like these are relatively rare and bring an aura of mystery and fascination, as ancient cultures often associated them with pivotal changes or moments of great significance.

Astrology views such alignments as amplifiers of planetary energies. Mercury, the planet of communication, might stir deep conversations. Venus, shining brightly, symbolizes love and beauty, while Mars energizes with its fiery passion. Jupiter’s presence brings expansion and wisdom, while Saturn offers lessons in discipline and resilience. Together, they create a dynamic mix of energies, sparking reflection on personal and collective paths.

Travel the dunes by day and camp under the expansive sky at night, warm up by the fire and enjoy the Bedouin food, music and hospitality.

This 2 night safari will have many points of time to meditate, take a contemplative walk, discover ancient desert tools and travel over the smooth sands in 4×4’s with awe.

Solo travelers welcome!
